WELCOME TO WORD BIZ

I help parents and teachers navigate the complex world of special education and I provide Orton-Gillingham tutoring to students for whom reading, writing and spelling are difficult.

I feel it is my moral obligation to help others gain access to the services and rights to which they are entitled.

I have tremendous understanding and empathy for what families and students faced with learning challenges experience. I have learning challenges myself so that makes me extremely passionate about helping others take control of their lives.

As a certified special education teacher, I am qualified to administer standardized testing and can create comprehensive reports that can be used during the Planning and Placement Team process to help the team develop appropriate goals and objectives for your child.

I can act as your tour guide, helping you navigate the complex world of special education. I understand the special education system and I can help you understand it too.

I have the training and experience to help your child learn the way they learn best. If I can’t help you, then I can recommend other professionals who can!

“Each of us has lived through some devastation, some loneliness, some weather superstorm or spiritual superstorm. When we look at each other we must say, I understand. I understand how you feel because I have been there myself. We must support each other and empathize with each other because each of us is more alike than we are unalike."

Certifications & Experience

Most people don’t make it past 8 years as a special education teacher due to burnout but I’m still going strong!

Over 20 Years of Experience

I have over 20 years experience working in special education so I understand the challenges teachers and districts face trying to support students with or without a diagnosis of dyslexia.

Certified in Multisensory Education

Certified by an International Multisensory Structured Language Education Council (IMSLEC) accredited program to provide Orton-Gillingham tutoring services.

Personal Firsthand Experience

As a parent, I learned how to successfully navigate the special education system without the help of expensive advocates or attorneys.

Master's / Published Work

An excerpt from my Master’s Thesis “Taking Diabetes to School” was published in the busiest diabetes related online magazine, Children with Diabetes, January 30, 1997

Knowledge of Reading Programs

I have an in-depth knowledge of remedial reading programs districts use to provide interventions. I know what tests need to be administered to tease out a learner profile that strongly suggests dyslexia.

Experience in Therapeutic Techniques

I have participated in over one-hundred and thirty five hours of Education in Therapeutic Techniques and over 100 hours of supervised practicum.

What would it be like to work with me?

Here’s a Testimonial from a Happy Client

“My daughter is a very reluctant learner and Andrea helped pull her out of her shell and made their sessions together both fun and educational. Andrea was instrumental in guiding me through her Individualized Education Plan (IEP) and providing advice on next steps, which was critical to ensure she received services at school that she is legally entitled to.”
